The five questions every calculator has to answer

Building a chart from a birth certificate is not a single lookup. It is a chain of decisions: when the day changes, when the year changes, when the month changes, whether the clock time should be converted to solar time, and which historical time-zone rule applied on that date.

A tool has to answer all five. It can answer them well or badly, but it cannot skip them. When two sites disagree, one of these five is almost always responsible, and the rest of this article shows what each disagreement looks like in a real chart.

Every table below is generated by this site’s own calculator when the page is built, so the numbers cannot drift away from what the live tool produces. The birth details are illustrative examples, not real people.

The day boundary changes your Day Master

Many traditions start the new day at the beginning of the Zi hour, which falls at 23:00. Others use civil midnight. For a birth in that last hour of the evening, the two conventions produce different day pillars — and because the Day Master is the stem of the day pillar, the single most quoted element of the chart changes with it.

This is the disagreement with the largest visible consequence, and it affects a narrow but very real slice of births. If your chart looks unfamiliar and you were born late in the evening, check this first.

The year does not begin at Lunar New Year

Four Pillars practice generally starts the year at Li Chun, the solar term in early February, rather than at Lunar New Year. The two can be more than a week apart, and every birth inside that gap is contested territory.

In 1990, Lunar New Year fell on 27 January and Li Chun on 4 February. A birth on 30 January is after the Lunar New Year but before Li Chun, so a tool anchored to the lunar calendar has already advanced the year pillar while a solar-term tool has not. Both are internally consistent. They are answering different questions.

Month pillars behave the same way, following the twelve Jie terms rather than lunar months, which is why a birth can sit in one calendar month and a different pillar month.

A clock is a civil agreement, not an astronomical measurement

Time zones are administrative. China spans roughly sixty degrees of longitude and keeps a single civil time zone, so a clock reading of 08:00 describes a very different solar position in the far west than it does in Shanghai. Traditional hour pillars are built on the Sun’s apparent position, not on the number the clock happened to show.

The correction is about four minutes for every degree of longitude, adjusted further by the equation of time, which accounts for apparent solar days not all being the same length. A tool that treats the certificate time as solar time is not making a rounding error; it is skipping a step.

The historical rule that catches almost everyone

Daylight saving is the quietest of the five, because it fails silently. A certificate records local civil time, and whether that civil time included a summer offset depends on rules that have changed repeatedly and are not always remembered locally.

China is the clearest case. It observed daylight saving from 1986 to 1991, so a summer birth in those six years was recorded on a clock running an hour ahead of the offset China uses today. A tool that hardcodes the modern offset shifts the birth moment by an hour without saying so, which is enough to change the hour pillar and, near 23:00, the day pillar as well.

This is also the one mistake a reader can make unaided. If you have been told to subtract an hour manually before entering a birth time, do not: a calculator that resolves time through the IANA database has already applied the historical rule, and adjusting by hand applies it twice.

So which one is correct?

For the day boundary and the choice of solar terms, there is no settled answer. Competent lineages disagree, and have disagreed for a long time. Anyone who tells you their day boundary is the only legitimate one is describing a preference, not a proof.

Historical time zones and solar-time correction are a different category. Those are legal and astronomical facts with authoritative sources, and a tool that gets them wrong is simply wrong. It is worth keeping the two categories apart: one is a matter of tradition, the other a matter of accuracy.

What a tool owes you is disclosure. If a site will not tell you where its day starts or whether it corrected for longitude, you cannot audit its output, and you cannot reconcile it against any other reading you have been given.

Finding out which one affected your chart

Work through the five in order of how much they move. Start with the birth time: if it falls between 23:00 and midnight, the day boundary is the likely cause and the Day Master itself may be in question. If the birthday is in late January or early February, look at the year boundary next. If the birthplace sits a long way east or west of its time zone’s meridian, check whether the other tool corrected for longitude at all.

Then check the date against daylight-saving history for that country, which is the step people almost never think to take. If none of those apply, compare the month pillars: a birth within a day or two of a solar term can move on a small difference in assumed time or location.

This site states its answer to all five, shows the true solar time it used, records the applied offset and corrections with every chart, and prints a visible warning when a birth sits close to a boundary. That is not a claim to be more traditional than another school. It means that when your chart disagrees with one you were given elsewhere, you can find where the two parted company instead of guessing.
