Clock time and local longitude

Time zones are organized around standard meridians, commonly spaced fifteen degrees apart. A location east or west of its time-zone meridian experiences local solar noon earlier or later than the clock’s noon.

A common longitude correction uses approximately four minutes per degree of longitude difference. That correction alone is not the entire calculation.

The equation of time

Apparent solar time also differs from mean solar time because Earth’s orbit is elliptical and its axis is tilted. The equation of time describes this seasonal difference. Depending on the date, it can shift apparent solar time by more than a few minutes.

A transparent tool should state which equation or astronomical library it uses and the time standard expected by that implementation.

Daylight-saving time and historical rules

A birth time written on a certificate is usually local civil time. Converting it responsibly may require the time-zone offset and whether daylight-saving time applied at that place and date. Historical time-zone rules are not always identical to current rules.

Location names must also be resolved to coordinates. Approximate coordinates create approximate solar-time results.

It then adds roughly four minutes per degree of birthplace longitude and an equation-of-time approximation to reach apparent solar time.

That corrected instant is what the Four Pillars are built from. The year boundary is Li Chun rather than Lunar New Year, month boundaries follow the twelve Jie solar terms, and the day changes at the start of the Zi hour (23:00) unless the reader selects civil midnight instead. When birth time is unknown, the hour pillar is omitted rather than guessed.

Astronomical calculation is not psychological validation

Accurately calculating the Sun’s apparent position does not by itself validate a personality interpretation. Calculation accuracy and interpretive validity are separate questions and should be described separately.
