A reading frame, not a fortune
A luck cycle does not tell you that a specific event will happen in year ten of a cycle. It shifts which stem and branch the chart is read through for roughly a decade. Two people with the same cycle pillars can read very differently, because the cycle interacts with each Day Master, the five-phase balance, and the rest of the natal chart.
Traditional language often describes a cycle as a “decade of energy” or a season of life. The useful part is the structure: a clear reference period, a disclosed direction, and a start age you can check. The interpretive part stays interpretive.
Starting from the month pillar
In the Ziping lineage that most Four Pillars tools follow, the month pillar is the starting point for major cycles. The month describes the season the person enters the world, and the cycles extend from that point: each step moves the stem one position and the branch one position, in the direction the rule gives you.
Eight ten-year cycles cover roughly eighty years. The site computes all eight whenever the direction setting is supplied. If the setting is omitted, the whole sequence is omitted rather than guessed.
Forward or backward: the direction rule
Many traditions use a binary convention based on the year stem and a traditional gender setting: a Yang-year male and a Yin-year female move forward; a Yin-year male and a Yang-year female move backward. The year stem is the stem of the year pillar, and Yang or Yin refers to its polarity.
This is a convention, not a modern claim about gender identity or a personality diagnosis. The site’s form labels the options “Traditional male setting” and “Traditional female setting”, and lets you choose “Omit major luck cycles” instead. The calculator treats the choice as an input, the same way it treats the day-boundary rule as an input.
When the first cycle starts
The start age uses a traditional conversion: the time from birth to the relevant solar-term boundary, divided by three days per year. Forward direction looks for the next Jie boundary after birth; reverse direction looks for the previous one. The result is often a decimal such as 6.98, which simply means the first cycle begins before the seventh birthday.
The boundary is computed from the Sun’s apparent ecliptic longitude, the same calculation that sets the month pillars. That is why a chart close to a solar-term boundary can show a noticeably different start age than a chart a day away. The site records the boundary timestamp with every chart, so the number can be audited.
A worked example from the calculator
Fictional example: a birth on 15 March 1990 at 10:30 in Shanghai, with the traditional male setting. The year pillar is Geng Wu, so the year stem Geng is Yang, and a Yang-year male moves forward. The calculator returns a start age of about 6.98 and these cycles: 7–17 Geng Chen, 17–27 Xin Si, 27–37 Ren Wu, 37–47 Gui Wei, 47–57 Jia Shen, 57–67 Yi You, 67–77 Bing Xu, 77–87 Ding Hai.

What this site calculates and what it omits
If you choose “Omit major luck cycles”, the calculator returns no luck-cycle data at all. It does not silently apply a default direction. If you choose one of the traditional settings, it computes eight cycles, the start age, and the forward or reverse direction, and stores all of it with the chart.
The annual theme is a separate layer. The site derives the year pillar for a selected calendar year and reads it through the Day Master’s Ten Gods relationships, branch clashes and harmonies, and twelve solar-month prompts. That annual layer appears in the paid Annual Blueprint, while the ten-year map is part of the core PDF.
Why the same cycle reads differently for different charts
A cycle pillar is not a fixed meaning. The same Geng Chen cycle is read as one relationship for a Geng Day Master, a different relationship for a Ren Day Master, and a third for a Ji Day Master, because the Ten Gods relationship is defined against the Day Master. Season, support, and existing branch interactions change the reading further.
Different schools also set the rules differently: some use other starting conventions or other boundary calculations. The site states its choices in the methodology and keeps the algorithm version on every stored chart. That disclosure is the point: you can see what was computed and why, and compare it with a reading you were given elsewhere.

What is a BaZi luck cycle (Da Yun)?
A Da Yun is a traditional ten-year reference period in many Four Pillars systems. It starts from the month pillar and advances one stem and one branch per cycle, giving a disclosed frame for reading the chart over roughly eighty years.
Do my luck cycles move forward or backward?
Under the traditional convention, a Yang-year male and a Yin-year female move forward, while a Yin-year male and a Yang-year female move backward. The direction depends on the year stem’s polarity and the birth-gender setting you choose in the calculator.
Why does my luck cycle start at an age like 6.98?

Are luck cycles predictions about what will happen?
